Talking therapy is not just ‘talking about your problems’; it is also about working towards solutions without judgement or criticism. I work with my clients in a process that involves exploration, understanding, reality testing and decision-making. The work may be short-term and directed towards a clear outcome, or involve deeper and longer-term exploration.
I have a special therapeutic interest in working with adults - sometimes referred to as boarding school survivors - whose difficulties may stem from having been sent away to school at a young age. I have completed professional development training in Specialist Psychotherapy with Ex-Boarders.
Another specialism is in mental health in academia, and an understanding of the particular pressures of academic life that can trigger or exacerbate anxiety, depression and other problems.

This isn’t an exhaustive list. Some people come to therapy for help with specific challenges or problems, but just as many others can’t explain or understand why they feel as they do. Everyone is different.
My approach is Integrative, which means I may draw on certain models and theories (including CBT, mindfulness-based, solution-focused and psychodynamic approaches), depending on your individual needs and difficulties.
As a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, I work within its Ethical Framework for Good Practice.
Alongside my private practice, I have worked in community counselling services in Scotland and England. My training and qualifications include:
Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP accredited), University of East London
Certificate in Counselling and Counselling Skills, Birkbeck, University of London
PhD (social history), University of Edinburgh
I continue to update and enhance my practice through regular professional development training courses and workshops.
I spent many years working in higher education, as a journalist and researcher in print and visual media, and as a manager in the voluntary sector. This experience is brought to my work as a therapist at a number of levels - not least an understanding of different working environments, and the ways in which relationships at work can be played out at home.
